Sullivan Park Public Art

While the CRA has been moving forward on the design of a new and improved Sullivan Park, a parallel project has been underway to ensure that the new park is a place for the entire community to enjoy. Incorporating public art into the overall redevelopment project is intended to stimulate an environment of creativity and address community issues such as race relations, crime and safety, history and the environment, for example. Sullivan Park's unique location and history make it a natural canvas for public art to create connections amongst members of the community to overcome these issues and interpret ideas collaboratively.

The Sullivan Park Art Experience is meant to spur residents to come together in unity as they come together to collectively interpret the identity of the park. The resulting interpretative tool will ensure the park's positive impact on the community and its contributions to quality of life and the overall redevelopment of the area.

The Power of Art to Transform Places

A Public Art Committee has been formed and has laid the groundwork to create the Sullivan Park Art Experience. The group has done community outreach to bring creative minds together and have researched public art types that may be a fit for Sullivan Park.

The Art in Sullivan Park Experience will be completed in 3 phases

The first phase will be the artistic mosaic overlay on the children's splash pad similar to the mosaic fountain shown above. The public art committee wanted to create a public art feature in a centralized park focal point. The City, CRA and Public Art Ensemble would like you to lend your support and participation in the Sullivan Park "Art in the Park" project.

We Need Your Help

As with any project, funding is a crucial component to feasibility and ability. For the public art project, Community Redevelopment staff identified the Community Foundation of Broward's Art of Community Grant as a funding source. This initiative is a good match as it supports projects that foster civic engagement and solutions to community issues through public art. The grant is a 50/50 match grant where there is an award made from the foundation for half of the funds and the other half is comprised of donations, sponsorships and CRA matching. The Art of Community Grant seeks to support projects whose mission is to connect the community through civic engagement projects. More specifically, projects that solve crucial community issues, through the creation and implementation of public art.
