Residential Recycling Contest

The 2010 Residential Recycling Contest was a great success!
The nominations for the Deerfield Beach Residential Recycling Contest are in, and S.E. 10th Court in the Cove neighborhood was chosen. For three weeks, neighbors on opposite sides of the street competed against each other to see which side recycled the most in their bins. After three weeks of competition, the winner was the north side of the street, with a whopping 2,371 gallons of valuable recyclable material, nearly double the amount of the standing record, 1,251 gallons. Residents on the south side of the street recycled a respectable 1,008 gallons of material.
The residential recycling contest is held each year as an innovative way to entice residents to recycle, through healthy competition and neighborhood pride. This year’s winners received passes to both the International Fishing Pier and Deerfield Beach Aquatic Center, a bag filled with recycled-content goodies, and the choice of either a composting bin or rain barrel.
Homeowner Jennifer Miller sees the recycling contest as, “a great way to set an example for our kids and try to keep our garbage to a minimum.”
Every recyclable item that is moved from the garbage can to the recycling bin makes a difference.
