Recycling
The City of Deerfield Beach Recycling Divison has one of the most comprehensive and progressive recycling programs in Florida. The Public Works Recycling Division strives to divert as much material from the wastestream as possible. Recognizing the need to preserve natural resources spurred the City Commission to create an ordinance making recycling mandatory in 1988. In fact, in appreciation for the extensive recycling effort, the City was recently awarded the Most Productive Recycling Program in 1999 by the Broward County Commission. The Recycling Program is continuously growing, as more services are made available to businesses and residents.
In order for recycling to be completely effective certain events have to take place. These events follow a very important theme known as "closing the loop." Closing the loop refers to three simple but necessary keys to recycle properly:
1. Collection of Recyclable materials
2. Processing of the material into new and practical goods
3. Consumer purchasing of these new goods made from recycled content
The recyclables collected by the City of Deerfield Beach is taken to several processing plants (sometimes called recycleries) to be sorted, baled, and sent to manufacturers as raw material to be transformed into new goods. Deerfield Beach, along with most other cities in Broward County, deliver all curbside and multi-family materials to a facility called the MRF (Materials Recovery Facility). The MRF, like other recycleries and balers, sorts and bales the material. The MRF locates the most economically and ecological beneficial markets for the material. The mixed plastics #4-6 at our drop off center are picked up by Plastic Pallet Sollution in South Bay, Fl and melted into shipping pallets.
After processing, recyclables are sent to manufacturers to be created into new products. These new products are then shipped to stores where consumers purchase recycled content products. Most manufacturers of consumer goods supplement some of the raw material that is used to generate their products with recycled materials. The paper industry, plastic industry, glass industry, and many others find innovative ways to incorporate recycled material into their products. In fact, you may not even be aware that some of the products that you regularly purchase may be made with recycled material. Normally, a small recycling arrow can be found on products made from recycled material with a brief description of the recycled content.
