Services are also discontinued during a hurricane warning. When conditions get over 35 mph it is not safe for our trucks or employees to function. During a state of emergency the facilities we take our materials to close giving us no place to dispose of materials.
The City of Deerfield Beach, along with most other cities in Broward County, is a member of the interlocal agreement. Cities participating in this agreement bring all of their garbage to one of the two waste to energy plants owned by Wheelabrator. The waste to energy plants burn the material into ash which is then put in the landfill. This significantly lowers the amount of material placed in the landfill. As the material burns it powers generators and provides electricity to 75,000 homes per year within Broward County.
Automated Cart Service
Old-fashioned manpower for garbage collection has been significantly reduced, as a result of Deerfield Beach’s efficient fully automated trucks. All of the city's neighborhoods are using the special garbage carts that are designed to be automatically lifted by the trucks. The automated system has many benefits, including lessening the likelihood of back injuries, reducing the collection time at the curb, and increasing the number of pick ups, which is a cost savings to the city.
The Department of Public Works and Environmental Services needs the assistance of residents in following the proper procedures for using this service.
Solid waste crews will ONLY pick up garbage that is in city-issued carts.
Drivers will no longer pick up extra bags placed on the ground or next to garbage carts, as this will slow down the pick-up time.
Additional garbage carts must be requested and approved through the Solid Waste Division.
Residents who need an additional cart must contact Solid Waste Services at 954-480-4394, so that the request can be evaluated, and a recycling assessment is completed. Once approved, there will be an additional $14 charge per month for an additional cart.
Carts must be placed curbside by 7:00 a.m. on the pick-up day.
Additional charges will apply for extra call-in pick-ups or return trips to an area if carts were not put out on time.
Recyclables and yard debris are not accepted in the garbage carts.
To decrease the costly volume of garbage disposal, residents are strongly urged to use their recycling bins to capture valuable recyclables, and take advantage of the city's award-winning recycling services. Additionally, old garbage containers can be recycled at the Recycling Drop Off Center, located at 401 SW 4th Street. For questions, please call 954-480-4394.
