Deerfield Beach Community Redevelopment Agency Approves FY21 Budget

At the August 25, 2020 meeting of the Deerfield Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), the CRA Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve the $7.2 million FY21 Budget and Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).

Consistent with the CRA’s mission to make capital improvements to spur redevelopment, the CRA Board approved a spending plan focusing on key capital projects.

The A1A S-Curve commercial district will get a major facelift with the Pedestrian Lighting and Utilities Undergrounding project. $1.75 million is budgeted to underground, overhead wires and remove above-ground utility poles. The project will also enhance pedestrian safety and street aesthetics with new pedestrian level lighting and streetscape improvements. This project is currently in the design phase. Construction is tentatively planned for the summer of 2021 and is expected to be completed in six months from the start of construction.

Public transportation, ADA improvements, and additional parking are goals of the CRA Plan. To address these goals, the CRA Board approved the $947,000 Island Mobility and Undergrounding Improvements project that will include the relocation of the current bus stop from NE 21st Terrace to East Hillsboro Boulevard, streetscape and ADA accessibility upgrades and the creation of additional on-street parking. This project’s major component includes the undergrounding of overhead utilities on East Hillsboro Boulevard to further improve area aesthetics and storm resiliency for local businesses and residents. This is currently in the design phase and construction is tentatively scheduled for the late summer of 2021.

In addition to major capital projects, the CRA Board approved funding for redevelopment programs, including Community Policing ($55,000), Art in Public Places ($50,000), Special Events ($175,000), and the Commercial Façade Grant Program ($364,000) in FY 21.

The next major future capital project in the CRA is the expansion of Sullivan Park through the construction of the Sullivan Park Community Facility. At the August 11, 2020 CRA Board meeting, the CRA Board approved a $266,122 contract with the architectural firm Bermello Ajamil for the design of this facility that is envisioned to be a one story community use center that will replace the former Chamber of Commerce building at 1601 East Hillsboro Boulevard. The design of this was funded from the FY20 CRA Budget and design work will continue in FY21. The cost of this capital project will be estimated when the project reaches the 50% design phase.
