Senator Perry E. Thurston, Jr. to Headline Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration Weekend

You won’t want to miss out on this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration featuring keynote speaker Senator Perry E. Thurston, Jr.!

Bring the family out to kick off the celebration with our annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade on Monday, January 20, 2020, at 10:00 AM. Following the parade will be a Family Fun Day Picnic beginning at noon on the baseball fields, located at the Oveta McKeithen Recreational Complex (445 SW 2nd St.) There will be fun games, inflatables slides, free snow cones, cotton candy, and great entertainment.

We are excited to announce that at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 20, we will have our Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ceremony featuring keynote speaker, Senator Perry E. Thurston, Junior. Senator Thurston has strong roots here in South Florida as he is a graduate of Pompano Beach High School, class of 1978, and an alumnus of the University of Miami’s School of Law, earning a Juris Doctorate Degree in 1987.

Senator Thurston has always made community activism a priority, from coaching little league sports to serving as President of the local Bar Association. Mr. Thurston is a leading proponent for the Restoration of Civil Rights Legislation and has even held several workshops aimed at guiding ex-felons through the restoration process. He has lead voter registration initiatives and conducted economic empowerment workshops for local businesses. He has also spearheaded the resurgence of youth baseball within Broward County’s African American communities.

Mr. Thurston was recently elected to the Florida Senate, District 33. He has received numerous honors and humanitarian awards because of his zealous advocacy and impactful legislation. Additionally, he has received the AIF Champion for Business Award, the FEA Friend of Public Education Award, and is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

The 2020 MLK Parade will be on Monday, January 20, 2020, from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM. This year the parade will begin at St. Ambrose Church (380 Federal Hwy) and will go north on US-1 for 0.4 miles, turn left onto E. Hillsboro Blvd for 1.1 miles, then turn left onto SW 3rd Ave/SW Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave. for 0.2 miles, and conclude at Oveta McKeithen Recreational Complex (445 SW 2nd St).
