The City of Deerfield Beach with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue would like to remind residents that National Fire Prevention Week will go from October 7 to October 13, 2018. This time of year, is a good time for residents to make sure they are ready should a fire ever happen at home.
According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), today’s home fires burn faster than ever. In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Knowing how to use that time wisely takes planning and practice. The NFPA reports that people feel the safest in their home, it is also the place people are at greatest risk to fire with four out of five U.S. fire deaths occurring at home. Experts say that over-confidence factors into complacency toward home escape planning and practice.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue wants to remind Deerfield Beach residents to remember that fires can happen anywhere and at any time, therefore you must remember to look, listen, and learn.
Additionally, officials want to remind residents to test home smoke detectors, monthly. Teach children matches and lighters are tools not toys. Parents are encouraged to create and practice an emergency evacuation plan with children and be sure the plan includes a meeting place.
