First Annual Ryan Owens Memorial Run

The City of Deerfield Beach and the Naked Warrior Project present the 1st Annual Ryan Owens Memorial Run, a four-mile beach run to celebrate and honor the life of SOCS (SEAL) William Ryan Owens, who was killed in combat in Yemen on January 29, 2017. The run will begin at 8AM on Saturday, November 4th, on the beach across from the Main Beach Parking Lot, 149 SE 21st Ave., followed by the kid’s fun run at 9:30AM. The finish line festival will feature food trucks and a beer garden for race participants.

Owens, 36, was assigned to SEAL Team 6 when he died of wounds received in a nighttime raid. He was on his 12th deployment as a SEAL and his 18th year in the Navy.

Ryan grew up in South Florida and then moved to Chillicothe, Illinois, to attend high school. His love of South Florida never wavered and he still spent his high school summers there. Ryan enlisted in the Navy before high school graduation, initially training as a cryptologic technician. Ryan completed his BUD’s training in December 2002 and was initially assigned to West Coast based SEAL Team 1 and then moved on to East Coast based SEAL Team 6 where he had been for 9 years. His father and brothers still reside in South Florida today and all speak of him wanting to return when he retired from the Navy. It was important to bring this memorial run to South Florida and bring a part of Ryan home.

All proceeds from this run will go to The Naked Warrior Project. The mission of this organization is to build memorials for those SEALS who have been killed in combat. The William Ryan Owens memorial will be the first for The Naked Warrior Project.
